Quick answer: choose wired when predictable connection, no charging and restricted-device compatibility matter most. Choose Bluetooth when ports and multi-device switching matter. The three connection types

Wired USB

A cable carries both data and power. The mouse is ready when connected to a compatible port and normally requires no battery management. The cable can restrict placement, drag against a desk edge or require an adapter on USB-C-only devices.

Wired is often suitable for fixed workstations, controlled environments, shared desks where pairing is inconvenient, and users who do not want charging. The exact USB connector and operating-system support still need verification.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth uses the computer’s built-in radio and leaves USB ports free. Some mice store several paired devices and switch between them. Pairing, operating-system Bluetooth behavior, radio congestion and battery level become part of troubleshooting.

Bluetooth is attractive for laptops, tablets, travel and multi-device work. “Bluetooth” alone does not prove which versions, profiles, operating systems or switching behavior are supported.

Proprietary 2.4 GHz receiver

A small USB receiver uses a manufacturer-specific wireless protocol. It often works after plugging in, with no operating-system Bluetooth menu. It occupies a port and can be lost. Some ecosystems let one receiver connect several compatible peripherals; others bind one receiver to one mouse.

Receiver-based wireless is useful where Bluetooth is unavailable or unreliable. Confirm replacement and re-pairing options before purchase, because an unavailable receiver can end the useful life of an otherwise functional mouse.

Dual- or tri-mode

Some mice offer cable, Bluetooth and receiver modes. This adds fallback options but also more switches, documentation and electronics. Verify whether the cable carries data or only charges; “wired mode” cannot be assumed from a charging socket.

What connection changes—and what it does not

Connection affects power, port use, pairing, radio behavior, mobility and sometimes report rate. It does not determine:

  • vertical angle;
  • hand-size fit;
  • thumb position;
  • button force or reach;
  • sensor placement;
  • weight distribution;
  • surface glide;
  • scroll feel;
  • accessibility; or
  • whether the device is comfortable for a particular person.

OSHA’s computer-workstation guidance recommends placing pointing devices close to the keyboard and keeping the wrist and hand aligned. A cable that pulls the mouse away or a receiver that forces an awkward hub location matters only insofar as it affects that setup.

Latency and pointer performance

Latency is the delay between physical movement and visible response. It includes the mouse sensor, internal processing, wireless or cable transport, USB polling, operating system, application, display refresh and rendering. A connection label cannot predict the whole chain.

Modern office tasks usually do not require competitive-gaming latency. Cursor stability, wake behavior and consistent tracking are more noticeable than a small nominal difference. Precision work may benefit from predictable performance, but hand fit and settings can dominate.

Report or polling rate

Polling rate describes how often a USB host receives updates, commonly stated in hertz. Higher rates can reduce the interval between reports, but they also use more processing and power and may not be supported in every mode. Bluetooth implementations may report differently from receiver mode.

Do not interpret a high number as an ergonomic benefit. It does not reduce button force or improve posture.

DPI or CPI

Retail pages often use DPI for cursor sensitivity. Higher is not inherently more precise or comfortable. A setting that moves across the required screens without large shoulder movement, while still allowing target selection, is the practical goal.

Wake delay

Wireless devices conserve power by sleeping. A short wake delay after inactivity can feel like lag. Check whether a click is needed, whether the first click is transmitted to the application, and whether sleep timing can be configured. Wired devices generally avoid battery-saving sleep but software or USB power management can still affect them.

Reliability and interference

A cable provides a direct physical link, but damaged conductors, connectors, hubs and ports can cause disconnections. Wireless avoids cable wear while adding radio and battery variables.

Bluetooth and many proprietary receivers use the 2.4 GHz band, which is also used by Wi-Fi and other devices. Actual interference depends on distance, obstacles, antennas, nearby radios, USB 3 equipment and implementation. A claim that one wireless category is always interference-free is not credible.

Improve reliability methodically:

  1. Charge or replace the battery.
  2. Update the operating system and approved device software.
  3. Move a receiver from behind metal or away from a noisy hub using an approved extension if supported.

Wired power
